You are home for winter break and your boredom and frustration may be starting to hit you. Here are some great tips on how to survive winter break. Make sure to keep peace with your family and enjoy your family time. It is pretty nice not having to pay for laundry and getting a free meal!
I was extremely excited to go home for winter break last year. Quality time with the family, no schoolwork, and holiday festivities were just a few of the things I was looking forward to.
What I didn't expect were the changes I would have to make to my lifestyle now that I was back living at home instead of in an apartment.
1. Money: When you were in high school, your parents may have footed the bill for things like gas, shopping, or eating out. Now that you're in college, your parents may be expecting you to pay for more of your personal expenses or to limit what you spend on nonessentials.
Being home for the holidays is great for a free meal or Target run here and there, but try not to take advantage of your parents—or their wallets.
2. Cars: Did your sibling inherit your car when you went away to school? This can create animosity when you're home for breaks, especially if both siblings have a fairly active social life.
Lay down some ground rules about who gets the car and when, and what will happen if both parties have a function at the same time.
3. Conduct: Certain habits that you may have picked up in college—such as messes, late night pizza orders, and use of profanity—simply won't fly now that you're home.
Keep in mind the company you're in now that you're home for break. Parents and younger siblings may not appreciate your inability to do laundry or stories about your college adventures. Keep this in mind before you pawn off your dirty clothes on Mom or dish to Dad about your craziest weekend of the semester.

We love getting greeting cards during the holidays, and we are sure that you do too. However, after the holidays no one really knows what to do with the cards that they have gathered over the past month or so. Here are some great tips on how to save those memories without taking up a whole closet in your apartment.
1 Scan or Photograph: Keep digital copies of important cards. File them by year, occasion, or filtered in your digital photo album.
2 Turn into A Book: Send your greetings to Cards for Keeps and they'll transform them into a bound book. If you're feeling crafty, you can try doing this yourself by following the blog Something Turquoise's DIY tutorial.
3 Reuse: I love well designed greeting cards. So much thought has gone into the design, so why not turn it into something else? As long as you're okay with losing the greeting part of the card, you could frame it, cut it up and use it for another project, make it into a gift tag, etc. The options are endless!
4 Turn into A New Card: Much in the same vein as above, a card does not need to be used just once. If it's a folded card, cut it in half and use the front as a postcard.
5 Donate to a Charity: Before you toss any unwanted cards, consider donating them. St. Jude's Ranch for Children will recycle used greeting cards and turn them into new holiday and greeting cards. You can also purchase their recycled cards to support their programs and services.

Let's Go Pirates. East Carolina University will take on Lousiana's Ragin Cajuns in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. This news comes after one of the most successful seasons in East Carolina's history, and the news that they would be joining the Big East Conference in 2014. The bowl will be broadcast December 22nd at noon.
East Carolina take by SEC blogger Chris Low: The big news off the field this week was that East Carolina would be joining the Big East Conference in 2014. On the field, the Pirates enter the postseason playing some of their best football of the season. They’ve won five of their past six games, but were edged out by UCF in a tiebreaker for the Conference USA East Division championships. Both teams finished 7-1, but UCF won 40-20 back on Oct. 4.
The trip to face Louisiana-Lafayette in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl will be East Carolina’s sixth bowl appearance in the past seven years. The Pirates, under third-year coach Ruffin McNeill, have shown that they can score points this season. In their past five wins, they’ve scored 40 or more points four times and ended the regular season with a 65-59 win over Marshall in two overtimes. Quarterback Shane Carden has rolled up 2,838 yards in total offense and accounted for 29 touchdowns.

Do you want to decorate your college apartment for the holidays? Everyone wants to be festive, but you do not want to spend a lot of money when you will be home for the holiday. Here are some great inexpensive tips on how to make your apartment a holiday wonderland.
- Personalize and hang stockings for you and your roommates – this
can be a fun project and very inexpensive. Purchase plain stockings and
paint, glitter, felt, etc. and create your own designs for your
stockings. You could even include some school spirit and make University themed stockings.
- Remember in Elementary School when you used to make paper snow flakes in art class. Flashback to those times and make your apartment a winter wonderland with this easy art trick.
- Hang ornaments from the stairs and or ceiling. Just make sure you do not damage the walls or ceiling while doing this.
- Use some ribbon and ties to put around chairs and lamps. This adds some festive spirit to even the smallest furniture.
- Make a giant present out of your door by using some wrapping paper and a bow. It instantly looks festive and adds so much holiday spirit to your apartment.
- Use holiday cards that you receive to decorate the walls in your apartment.
- Play Christmas music on your ipod or on Pandora!

We hope everyone has a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! Spend some time
with your friends and family and remember everything in life that you
are thankful for.

Do you not get to go home for Thanksgiving? It is o.k if you can not. There are still some great ways to enjoy the holiday, and get a break from the daily grind of classes. Keep reading to learn some tips and tricks to enjoy your holiday away from home.
Many college campuses look like deserted ghost towns around
Thanksgiving. The vast majority of students usually head home for some
good food, R & R, and family time. But for those students who can't
-- or don't want to -- go home, there are still some great options for
how to have a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday.
- Volunteer. No matter where you live, there are undoubtedly
places nearby that could use volunteers on Thanksgiving Day. Check out
women's shelters, homeless shelters, places that serve veterans,
hospitals, and even local foster homes. Giving back can make you feel
great while providing you with some great companionship -- and grub, of
course!
- Go home with a friend. If you live too far away to head home,
try heading home with a friend or roommate. You can see an entirely new
part of that person's life, have fun, and still get that fantastic
feeling that comes from being "home."
- Organize something on campus. Chances are, you aren't the
only student on your campus not planning on heading home for
Thanksgiving. Organize an event that includes a nice dinner,
volunteering, or even a movie-watching marathon. It can be a great
opportunity to meet new people and enjoy yourself while still feeling
relaxed and like you're on vacation.
- Offer to housesit for friends or others. Know someone -- a
friend, a faculty member, an administrator -- who is going to have an
empty house? Offer to housesit over Thanksgiving. You can enjoy the
comforts of being out of the residence hall without having to deal with
the inevitable drama that comes from having family running around.
Additionally, you can always cook a nice Thanksgiving dinner in a great
kitchen and have a few friends over for a nice, relaxing meal.
- Take the day for yourself. There are some of us out there who
enjoy being alone from time to time -- which is nearly impossible as a
college student. Spend the day sleeping in, catching up on homework,
watching movies, and doing whatever it is you wish you had time for when
your schedule is crazier. Just make sure to treat yourself to some
slow-cooked turkey and cranberry sauce in there somewhere!

Fall is a great season to craft and decorate your house. Here are five great do it yourself craft ideas to make your apartment ready for the fall and winter seasons. Try them out this weekend to decorate for your Halloween party.
While it's hard to deny the appeal of this season — the swirls of
colorful leaves drifting down to the ground, crisp air outside and cozy
fires inside, warm, spicy baking smells and the return of my beloved
Pumpkin Spice latte — I am and always will be a beach kid from the
golden coast and as such, you will always have to drag me kicking and
screaming away from my beloved summer.
In an effort to embrace the season at hand I've rounded up five great fall DIY projects. There, I'm feeling cozier already.
1. Acorn Wreath from Martha Stewart
2. Flaming Foliage Candles from Martha Stewart
3. Burlap Pumpkins from Thistlewood Farms
4. Wax Paper and Crayon Leaves from V and Co.

Are you having a Halloween Party for your friends this year? If you do not have a lot of money to decorate, you can still have a spooky apartment for the party. Here are six cheap do it yourself Halloween decorating ideas.
This Halloween, get creative and use supplies found in your home for green-friendly Halloween decor.
Planning ahead for Halloween will allow you to budget, as well as
reduce the environmental impact of the festivities. Rather than
purchasing every Halloween décor piece from the store, consider making
your own by reusing supplies found right in your home. To go green this
Halloween, read on for our suggestions of taking old things in your
house and turning them into new, spooky decorations.
Mason Jar Pumpkin
If you have canning jar lids laying around, this project will give them a
new purpose. Gather together lids of the same size. String the lids
together, tying the string tightly. Evenly spread the lids around. Next,
stick cinnamon sticks in the center. To create leaves, cut some out of
burlap. This goes perfectly as a centerpiece on your dining room table
or coffee table. It can also be placed on a shelf on top of books.
Head in a Jar
If you’re looking for creepier decorations, this one is perfect for you.
Use a wide mouth jar for this project. You’ll also need a great picture
that goes in the jar. It needs to be a flattened image of a head. Run a
quick search on a search engine, and you should find some great
examples. Print this image on thick and slick paper, making sure it will
fit into the jar. Roll the picture and place it in the jar, making sure
it fills up about ¾ of the circumference of the jar. Fill the jar with
colored water. This can be placed in the fridge to creep out the
midnight snackers. On Halloween night, drop a few glow sticks in the jar
for added ambiance.
Tin Can Luminaries
To upcycle old soup cans, use them for luminaries. If you have several
cans, create a design in the cans, from ghosts to spelling out “BOO.” To
start the project, fill the cans up with water and stick them in the
freezer. This allows you to hammer a design into the cans without
denting the cans. Use a nail and hammer to create the design. Once the
ice melts, dump the water and place tea lights into each can.
Mummy Cereal Boxes
Old bed sheets in your linen closet that don’t fit any beds in your home
are perfect for this DIY Halloween craft. Cut the fabric into thin
sheets. Then, take empty cereal or cracker boxes and cover with the
white sheets. Once the box is covered, tuck the end in. Optional: attach
googly eyes.
Halloween Garland
Take old cardboard paper towel rolls and paint them pumpkin orange.
Then, slice them into thin strips and create pumpkin shapes. Use twine
to string the pumpkins together and hang on your wall.
Bat Mobile Head out to your backyard and pick up one or two sticks from the yard.
You’ll also need clear thread, or fishing line. For the bats, you use
thin cardboard, such as cereal or cracker boxes. Cut several bats from
the cardboard, and hang the bats to a branch. Hang in various lengths.

Midterms are coming up, and these times can be stressful for anyone. Preparing is the best way to ace those midterms, so here are some tips to help you prepare.
1. Get a good night’s sleep before the exam.
2. An
absolute must if you can: get prior years’ exams and, with a small group
of classmates, prepare point form sample answers to share among
yourselves.
3. Review
your notes to see all the items the professor indicated were important.
In some cases, s/he might even have hinted at exam topics.
4. Take a
quick scan of the course outline – make a note of the topics the
professor seemed to spend a lot of time on, or otherwise emphasized.
5. Take a
look at the assignments if there were any – see if you can find topics,
skills or techniques that were emphasized, especially those after the
mid-term.
6. Did the professor comment on areas of weakness on the mid-term? These sometimes reappear on the final.
7. Make a
set of study notes from your class notes and the text. Writing them down
in condensed format aids in recall during the final exam, and in some
cases, helps you identify items you need to clarify with a friend or
teaching assistant. Work with the group you formed to address point 2.
If you like – this can increase the scope of your studying.
8. If there
is a key item you need to remember for the exam, study it right before
you enter the exam room. Right after the exam starts, write down what
you know. A favorite is to list formulas (or dates?) that you need to
remember. If you wait until you are freaked out by a difficult exam
question, you might not remember them.
9. Make
sure you have a meal that includes carb’s AND proteins before the exam.
This will give you staying power. Take a granola bar and fluids to your
exam desk if permitted.
10. In case you have forgotten the first, and very important point, get a good night’s sleep before the exam.

North Carolina writers and filmmakers will gather at ECU for the North Carolina Literary Homecoming. The event will offer workshops and panel presentations from these famous literary icons.
East Carolina University will honor the region’s literary traditions
Sept. 21 and 22 during the Ninth Annual Eastern North Carolina Literary
Homecoming, presented by Joyner Library and the North Carolina Literary
Review. The event will offer interactive workshops in addition to panel
presentations.
Seven North Carolina writers and two filmmakers will discuss the
translation of the written word into film during the event which has the
theme, “Litflix: Adapting North Carolina Literature into Film.”
For nine years, the ENCLH has been nourishing and revitalizing the
creative spirit for writers as the event provides a place where artists
and community members can interact and share ideas. The works
represented by the award-winning authors encompass a variety of genres
including poetry, fiction, historical nonfiction, and drama and how they
tie into Eastern North Carolina culture.
Each year, the Literary Homecoming kicks off with the presentation of
the Roberts Award for Literary Inspiration. This year the award will be
presented Sept. 21 to eastern North Carolina poet James Applewhite for
his significant influence upon the literature of the state.
“The Roberts Award, named in honor of B.W.C. and Snow Roberts of Durham,
is a fitting way to honor James Applewhite,” said Maury York, Joyner
Library’s assistant director for special collections. York described
Applewhite as an outstanding poet with deep roots in eastern North
Carolina.
Also on Sept. 21, Timothy B. Tyson will speak about the film adaptation
of his book “Blood Done Sign My Name” in a lecture on “Civil Rights
Meets Silver Screen.”
On the second day of the event, several North Carolina writers whose
literary works have been adapted into film will explore how film can
both enhance and distract from the meaning of the written word. As
Americans steadily turn away from reading and more toward cinema and
television, the literary homecoming strives to reemphasize the value of
the written word, while recognizing the value of visual media as a
catalyst toward that end, said Margaret D. Bauer, Rives Chair of
Southern Literature and editor of the North Carolina Literary Review.
The luncheon on Sept. 22 will feature a reading by Daniel Wallace,
author of “Big Fish,” which was adapted into a 2003 feature film
directed by Tim Burton and starring Ewan McGregor.
Award-winning author Charles Frazier will deliver the keynote session at
4 p.m. Sept 22. Frazier’s first novel, “Cold Mountain,” winner of the
1997 National Book Award, the 1997 W.D. Weatherford Award, and the 1998
Boeke Prize, was adapted in 2003 into a major motion picture that was
nominated for seven Academy Awards. Frazier’s second novel, “Thirteen
Moons,” was selected as the first literary work to be translated into
the Cherokee language. His most recent novel is “Nightwoods.”
Bauer encourages everyone to “read poetry by James Applewhite and essays
by Frazier and Tyson, as well as articles about other guest writers’
film adaptations, in the recently released 2012 issue of the North
Carolina Literary Review and then join us at ECU to meet these literary
stars in person.”

Do you know where the ECU Pirate mascot came from? We were curious so we did some research and came across this from
ECUPirates.com.
The Pirate became associated with East Carolina University in 1983. There was a contest to name the Pirate, where the elementary schools of Pitt County were involved and from the nickname Pee Dee the Pirate was derived. The name Pee Dee was believed to come from the Pee Dee Rivers that flow through North and South Carolina. Back in the colonial days there were pirates that stayed up and down the rivers. In December of 1985, the Chancellor of ECU decided to drop the nickname Pee Dee from the mascot's name, and to only be called the Pirate. This was a result from ECU's student body who said that it was unfair because they did not have any say in naming the mascot. Over the years, people still refer to the mascot as Pee Dee "The Pirate".
Pete, by the way, is another story. Pete was an unofficial dog mascot, but only for a few years in the mid-1970s. Pete resembled the dog in the "Little Rascals" movies and carried the reputation of a back-alley brawler with an intense dislike for rams (the mascot at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and wolves (the mascot at NC State University). During Pete's time, the defensive players on the Pirate's football team were called the "wild dogs" because the players performed like a vicious pack of them.
Other mascots have included students dressed as parrots and pirates. A live wildcat was the mascot in 1930 - 31.
